Could you wake up every morning knowing that you were losing ground? That you and your children were one step from going under?

What if you chose to work, but couldn't make a living wage? Thousands of working women face this stark reality every day. At today's minimum wage, a woman working 40 hours a week takes home less than $200. Even with overtime, many working women who live and work in Chicago survive on little more than $1,000 to $1,200 a month.

Working women earning less than $30,000 typically receive no public aid. They have little access to childcare programs, little or no health care, and few choices for affordable housing. These women are motivated but struggling.

The Eleanor Foundation is striving to change that. Founded in Chicago in 1898, we have supported low-income working women in Chicago for over a century, helping them as they strive to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

The Eleanor Foundation provides financial assistance to community and outreach organizations that offer innovative programs to help this underserved population. We provide funding, challenge grants, research, and institutional expertise to organizations with innovative programs to help women.

The Eleanor Foundation creates the conditions for low-income working women to succeed. We support women as they build a sense of independence, dignity, and hope. For more information on our work, please contact us.
