Grants 2005
The Eleanor Foundation made its first set of grant awards for 2005 on March 10. Of thirty-three proposals received, we awarded a total of $162,504 to the following three organizations:
- $69,224 to the Community Economic Development Law Project
This award will help 200 women over the next two years to become first-time homeowners under the Choose To Own Program. CEDLP will use pro bono legal representation to offer assistance with inspections, closing, and estate planning to these women, who have pre-qualified for mortgages.
- $30,000 to the Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing
This grant provides second-year funding for the Homesharing Program launched in 2003 with an earlier grant from the Eleanor Foundation. The Homesharing program carefully pairs homeowners (primarily seniors) with working women in homesharing arrangements throughout the south side of Chicago. Post-match follow-up, including dispute resolution if needed, is also provided.
- $63,280 to the Marcy Newberry Association on behalf of the West Side Consortium Training Institute
In conjunction with Malcolm X College, WSCTI offers the most comprehensive basic training program for home-based child care providers in Chicago. Our grant will launch an enhancement program for women who have already completed the basic 20-week course. This enhancement program will feature a series of workshops focusing on nutrition, special needs children, detecting and dealing with signs of child abuse, parent-caregiver relations, and financial and business planning for child care businesses. The program will help providers of child care to meet licensing requirements, improve their businesses, and offer much-needed affordable child care services to other working women.
