Eleanor Foundation
November 9, 2011
The Eleanor Foundation, the Chicago nonprofit that designs and funds innovative programs to promote sustained economic self-sufficiency for working female heads-of-households in the Chicago region, has elected three new business leaders to its Board of Directors, announced Foundation President Rosanna A. Márquez.
Jay Fahn, a senior vice president at First Eagle Bank, Margaret Paddock, a senior vice president at U.S. Bank and the Chicago market leader for wealth management services, and Courtney VanLonkhuyzen, a senior commercial counsel for Motorola Mobility, Inc., join a board of directors committed to expanding the Eleanor Foundation's outreach and fundraising efforts as the Chicago-based grant-maker continues to build its innovative Eleanor Network, a city-wide network of direct service organizations that help lower-income working female heads-of-households to achieve and maintain economic independence.
More than 330,000 households in the Chicago region are headed by working female heads-of-households who make less than a living wage, with average annual incomes of barely $19,000—according to the Foundation's commissioned research. Typically, these women are the only wage-earners in the household and are the sole caregivers for their children. The Eleanor Foundation seeks to improve the economic situation of these working women, moving them into jobs that pay a living wage and that offer economic self-sufficiency for their families.
"Jay Fahn, Margaret Paddock, and Courtney VanLonkhuyzen are outstanding individuals who have demonstrated sincere commitment to our mission. Each has the ability to help our organization realize its strategic and fundraising objectives," said Eleanor Foundation President and CEO Rosanna Márquez. "They join an enthusiastic and growing board that includes representatives from the business and nonprofit communities, both of which support our vital work."
Márquez notes, "As we continue to expand our Eleanor Network, our board plays a crucial role in guiding our program and reviewing our success in achieving the Foundation's goals."
Jay Fahn joined First Eagle Bank in 2007, formerly having been senior vice president at Hyde Park Bank & Trust Co. Prior to that, he was a vice president at First National Bank of Chicago. With a business career that has spanned three continents, including stints in South Africa and the United Kingdom, Fahn has also lectured at DePaul University on the topic of geopolitics and he is the founder of the Orca Aart Gallery in the Near North neighborhood of Chicago. Fahn earned a B.A. in History at Williams College and a Master of Philosophy in International Relations at the University of Oxford.
Margaret Paddock is senior vice president of The Private Client Reserve at U.S. Bank, where she oversees the private banking, trust administration and asset management divisions serving the Chicago market. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, she is also a graduate of Cannon Financial Institute of Wealth Management for Private Bankers and holds her FINRA Series 6 and 63 registrations.
Courtney VanLonkhuyzen joined Motorola Mobility as a senior commercial counsel in 2010. She previously practiced as an attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. VanLonkhuyzen recently served as the co-chair of the Eleanor Foundation's event committee, helping raise funds to reach the goal of promoting the economic success and financial stability of working female heads-of-households in Chicago. VanLonkhuyzen earned her J.D. cum laude at the Northwestern University School of Law and her B.A. magna cum laude from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
About the Eleanor Foundation
A research-driven public grant-making fund, the Eleanor Foundation invests in innovative programs that help working female heads-of-households in Chicago with incomes of between $10,000 and $40,000 to achieve and maintain economic independence. The Eleanor Foundation is building the Eleanor Network, a unique collaboration with direct service organizations and other partners to build and maintain programs that provide these women with access to job-skills training and career development services, along with access to affordable housing, dependable childcare, and financial coaching. The Eleanor Foundation also sponsors research on the needs of the women in our target population, which helps us ensure that programs in the Eleanor Network deliver the services that these women need.
